How to declutter your home before moving house

Jasmine Sleigh is the owner of the largest decluttering company in the south west: Change Your Space

She is a 10-year member of the Association of Professional Declutterers and Organisers UK , and her 2023 book ‘Being Owned: A Decade in Professional Decluttering’ has sold hundreds of copies worldwide.

Here she shares her top 3 tips on why decluttering is an essential step of preparing for a move:

1. A spacious property

Most people make up their minds about a property in less than a minute of looking at the online photographs. They are projecting themselves and their lifestyle on to the space they are walking through. You will want to create a sense of space to show your home at its best for sale.

2. A new chapter

A move can be the first time that people have sorted right to the back of cupboards, and so you may find hidden treasures to take with you as part of your story, and you may also find lots of items that do not fit with your current and future life in your new home.

3. Make and save money

It is estimated that over a third of us have enough clutter to fill an entire room. A good review can save money on removals cost by not transporting items you no longer value or use, and some can even be sold generating funds that may be useful for that post-move treat.

Fantastic job. Definitely worth the cash. I will recommend to friends! Friendly guys full of energy. Victor, Devon 12th November 2018

Victor

Our move went very smoothly from the initial estimate of how much it would cost and how many boxes we would need to actually moving us in to our new home. The team on the day were very helpful and efficient. We couldn't speak more highly of Mike and his team and would recommend them to anyone. March 2022

We used Mike and his team to move my sister in law from Budleigh Salterton in Devon to Orpington Kent. From start to finish the whole of Mikes team were excellent. They under-promised and definitely over-delivered. We couldn't have asked for a better service. We would most certainly recommend Mike and his team to anyone considering moving. April 2021
